Valeria Gutierrez
  • Major Professor: Dr. Maciel Hernandez
Bio

I am a current Ph.D. student working with Dr. Maciel Hernández in the Socioemotional and Academic Resilience (SOAR) lab. Prior to UC Davis, I completed a B.S. in Psychology from Arizona State University in 2023. After graduation, I held a post-baccalaureate position with the Arizona Twin Project, where I engaged with Spanish-speaking participants and managed recruitment efforts.

My current research interests focus on investigating how cultural processes (e.g., familism, ethnic-racial socialization) interact with family, peer, and media contexts to influence socioemotional and academic functioning among Latine and other minority youth. My overall aim is to integrate culturally relevant sources of resilience and strength when studying the development of minoritized populations. Outside of academics, I enjoy reading fantasy, playing board games, and attempting new crafts.
